Chamaerops humilis var cerifera "Blue Mediterranean Fan Palm is a small slow-growing fan palm, native to the coastal areas ofNorthwestern Africa, and rocky slopes of Atlas Mountains of Morocco at up to 2,000 m altitudes.
The Blue Mediterranean Fan Palm is a small clustering palm, growing to a height of 1-4 metres. This palm has a variable growth habit, and plants may have one or many trunks, be dwarf or tall, bushy or sparse and with a greyish leaf that produces a Blue Hue that covers the leaf to protect from heat/cold.
This palm is extremely cold tolerant, and similar to the hardiness of the Trachycarpus, and have been planted as far South as Timaru and Queenstown. Does best in temperate climates and adaptable to a wide range of soils but does not like poor drainage. Plant in a rock garden or have a few in pots scattered around the pool, patio or garden.
