Butia capitata “Jelly Palm” is a medium-sized palm that is native to many of the Southen American countries where you will find growing in grasslands, dry woodlands and savannahs.
The Jelly Palm is a pretty robust Palm that can grow up to 5 meters in height and the same wide. Adaptable to a wide range of climates and with its distinctive grey-green arching fronds making it a highly desirable feature palm. Tolerates an amazing range of conditions from coastal to the arid inland. Will do well in warm regions and even tolerates some frost. Does best in an open, sunny position, is not too fussy about soil type but MUST have well-drained soil. The Butia is extremely drought tolerant once established
The foliage colour also provides good contrast in a planting of mixed palms, or as an avenue planting. Should be given plenty of room to spread so its arched fronds can be seen to their best effect. Can be grown successfully in a container for a few years before outgrowing the pot
